Controller / Director of Accounting

📍 California (Remote)
💰 $185,000 – $205,000 Base + 15–20% Bonus

A high-growth specialty finance platform is seeking a hands-on Controller / Director of Accounting to lead and scale its accounting function. This is a senior leadership role reporting directly to the CFO within a multi-entity, direct lending environment.

The business operates nationally, originates significant monthly transaction volume, and manages an active on-balance-sheet portfolio across affiliated lending entities and structured vehicles. The environment is fast-paced, entrepreneurial, and operationally complex.

The Opportunity

This role sits at the center of the finance organization. You will own consolidated financial reporting, audit management, internal controls, treasury oversight, and support budgeting and forecasting in partnership with executive leadership.

The ideal candidate is technically strong, operationally sharp, and comfortable operating both strategically and hands-on in a growth-oriented lending environment.

What You’ll Own

Financial Reporting & Consolidation

  • Lead monthly, quarterly, and annual close across multiple legal entities

  • Prepare consolidated US GAAP financial statements

  • Manage eliminations, intercompany reconciliations, and ownership allocations

  • Deliver timely reporting to executive leadership

Lending & Revenue Accounting

  • Oversee accounting for loan originations, fee and interest income

  • Ensure proper revenue recognition and accrual methodologies

  • Manage accounting for broker commissions and direct lending structures

  • Oversee loan-level accounting and allowance methodologies

Treasury & Cash Management

  • Supervise funding wires and cash movement controls

  • Manage bank reconciliations and daily cash reporting

  • Strengthen fraud prevention and control procedures

Budgeting & Forecasting

  • Partner with the CFO on annual budgets and rolling forecasts

  • Translate operational metrics into financial models

  • Provide budget-to-actual analysis and scenario modeling

Audit, Controls & Compliance

  • Lead annual external audit and manage auditor relationships

  • Prepare technical accounting memos and audit schedules

  • Strengthen internal controls and documentation

  • Support regulatory, lender, and licensing reporting requirements

Multi-Entity & SPV Oversight

  • Manage accounting across affiliated entities and structured vehicles

  • Coordinate with external tax advisors on federal and state filings

  • Oversee entity-level reporting and consolidation processes

Leadership & Systems

  • Build and mentor an accounting team

  • Establish scalable close processes and SOPs

  • Improve automation, workflow, and reporting systems

  • Partner cross-functionally across sales, credit, operations, and HR

What We’re Looking For

  • 8–12+ years of progressive accounting experience

  • Proven leadership of accounting teams

  • Deep multi-entity consolidation experience

  • Strong technical US GAAP expertise

  • Experience managing external audits

  • Budgeting and forecasting exposure

  • Background in specialty finance, lending, fintech, or financial services preferred

  • CPA preferred

You should be equally comfortable building structure in complexity and operating hands-on when needed. This role requires strong executive communication skills and a high degree of ownership.

Compensation

  • Base: $185,000 – $205,000

  • Bonus: 15–20%

  • Total Target Compensation: $215,000 – $245,000
