The Company

Storm2’s client is a VC-backed NYC FinTech building the software that private fund managers use to run their funds. Private funds manage around $15T in capital and are growing fast, but the back-office tooling has never kept up, especially at the hard end: the last 10% of complexity that’s genuinely painful to reconcile at quarter end.

That’s the company’s whole pitch to PE groups. They can’t ship a fully bespoke build for every fund structure, but they get close, and when a fund comes down the pipe that nobody has seen before, they can fill the gap. They’re 35 engineers today, heading toward a much larger org by the end of the year, and they hire for a high bar.

The Role

This is a seat on the team that builds the core primitives the entire platform runs on. They own a custom expression language that lets clients define any financial calculation without writing code, a workflow engine that orchestrates multi-step fund operations, and the allocation and waterfall models that decide how every dollar moves through a fund structure.

It’s a genuinely unusual brief: part language design, part financial modelling, part distributed systems. You’re not bolting features onto a product, you’re building the foundational abstractions that hundreds of downstream features depend on. The team sits between the platform engineers at the back of the stack and the product teams at the front, and they’re the ones who make the impossible fund structures work.

The profile that’s worked best here is high ownership: a founding engineer or someone who’s spent a few years making real architectural decisions and living with them. They’re not looking for someone solid. The last hire who crushed it came in with the depth to model genuinely hard domain logic and the appetite to own it.

What you’ll be working on:

• Extending a financial expression language with its own parser, execution engine, type system and audit framework. Adding functions and calculation contexts, optimising execution, and building tooling that makes complex financial logic composable and debuggable.
• Designing the runtime that coordinates multi-step, stateful fund operations like capital calls, closings and fee postings, and getting them to execute correctly across distributed systems.
• Modelling the financial mechanics that determine how money moves: allocations, waterfalls, carry, equalisation. Translating intricate fund structures into configurable, auditable models that hold up across every customer’s unique setup.

What you’ll bring:

• A track record of building systems where correctness is non-negotiable: financial calculations, billing engines, trading systems, or similar domains where a rounding error is a production incident.
• Strong instincts for abstraction design, building configurable primitives that generalise across use cases without collapsing under edge cases.
• Real depth in relational databases and transactions, with the data modelling chops to design for auditability from the ground up.
• Solid grounding in platform and distributed systems. You understand the layers of the stack and where this kind of engine sits within them.
• The seniority to make big calls. This is pitched at the Staff end, and the strongest candidates have led highly configurable systems built to absorb a lot of variability.
• Bonus points for having built DSLs, formula engines, rule systems or other user-programmable abstractions, and for genuine curiosity about the mechanics of private markets.
