⚔ Senior Backend Engineer
šŸ“ Remote (US)

I’m supporting our client, a high-impact fintech infrastructure company, as they hire a Senior Backend Engineer to help architect and scale mission-critical financial systems.

The platform processes 100M+ in weekly transaction volume, supports payment processing, fraud detection, and compliance workflows, and operates with 99.9%+ uptime. The engineering bar is high because the systems sit directly in the flow of money movement.

This is a senior role focused on building complex backend systems that coordinate payments, fraud detection, compliance, and user management across a distributed microservices architecture.

The Opportunity

You’ll work on systems that:

  • Process millions of dollars daily

  • Coordinate cross-border payments and financial APIs

  • Meet strict regulatory and compliance requirements

  • Operate reliably at scale

You’ll play a key role in shaping backend architecture as the platform continues to grow.

What You’ll Do

Architect Critical Financial Systems

  • Design and implement payment processing, fraud detection, and compliance services

  • Build systems that operate reliably under high transaction volumes

  • Ensure solutions meet regulatory and audit requirements

Lead Cross-Domain Engineering

  • Coordinate interactions across payments, fraud, user management, and compliance domains

  • Design systems that integrate cleanly with third-party financial services

Drive Technical Decisions

  • Lead architecture discussions that impact the broader platform

  • Establish engineering best practices and scalable design patterns

Improve Performance & Reliability

  • Optimize distributed microservices for throughput and resilience

  • Strengthen observability, fault tolerance, and system stability

Mentor & Collaborate

  • Support and mentor junior engineers

  • Partner closely with product and compliance teams to align technical solutions with business and regulatory needs

What They’re Looking For

  • 5+ years building complex, production-grade backend systems

  • Demonstrated systems engineering experience solving cross-domain challenges

  • Strong foundation in algorithms, data structures, and core computer science principles

  • Experience with distributed systems, microservices, and event-driven architectures

Technical Stack

  • Python (Python 3) with strong API and backend development experience

  • SQL and NoSQL database design

  • Cloud infrastructure experience (GCP preferred, or similar platforms)

  • Familiarity with architecture patterns such as domain-driven design, clean architecture, and CQRS

  • Ability to design systems balancing performance, maintainability, and business requirements

Preferred Experience

  • Payment processing, fraud detection, or compliance systems

  • Knowledge of AML, KYC, PCI DSS, or similar financial regulations

  • Banking integrations or money movement systems

  • High-scale transaction environments

  • Coordinating multiple third-party integrations

Why Apply?

  • Direct impact within a small, high-calibre engineering team

  • Ownership of architecture decisions that will scale with the business

  • Complex, meaningful engineering challenges in financial infrastructure

  • Opportunity to help shape engineering culture and standards

  • Remote-first environment with flexibility

This role suits engineers who enjoy systems thinking, architectural ownership, and working close to real-world financial complexity.
