Storm2

⚡ Founding Front-End Engineer
🌍 New York City (4 days in-office)
💲Founding equity & $150-180k base

The Company

Storm2’s client is a YC-backed FinTech building a portfolio risk and attribution analytics platform for institutional investors. Portfolio managers, risk teams, and quants use it to get faster, more customisable insights on their own data, deployed inside their own cloud environment. The team is three people right now: two founders and a founding engineer. By the end of this year, they expect hundreds of billions of dollars of assets to be running through the platform.

The Role

You’d be the fourth person in the building. That’s worth being clear about, because it changes what the job actually is.

There’s no design system to inherit, no front-end lead to check your work, and no sprint process managing your queue. The founders move quickly, use AI heavily across the development workflow, and expect the same from you. What they can’t get from AI tooling alone is the product taste and engineering judgment to take fast-moving output and turn it into something that institutional users, portfolio managers and quants who will notice immediately if something feels off, will actually trust.

The product includes dashboards, risk decomposition workflows, scenario analysis, pivot-style interfaces, drill-down charting, and natural-language interfaces to portfolio analytics. You’d own the front-end surface end-to-end, shaping how it’s architected and setting the standard for how it gets built as the team grows. The equity at this stage, in a YC-backed company with this kind of early traction, is the real thing.

If you’ve built expert-facing analytics tools and found yourself frustrated watching the UI lag behind the sophistication of the underlying engine, this is the right problem.

What you’ll be working on:

  • Owning the front-end architecture for the core analytics platform from scratch
  • Building high-performance interfaces for portfolio risk, attribution, scenario analysis, and charting
  • Designing and implementing dense data experiences: tables, pivots, filters, drill-downs, saved views
  • Shaping AI-assisted workflows that connect natural-language queries to structured analytics and exploration
  • Working directly with the founders to translate complex analytical workflows into coherent product experiences
  • Reviewing and raising the quality of AI-generated code and UI patterns rather than accepting them at face value
  • Defining front-end standards and component patterns as the team scales

What you’ll bring:

  • Strong React and TypeScript experience, with a track record shipping complex, data-heavy interfaces
  • Deep understanding of front-end architecture, state management, and performance optimisation
  • Experience building for expert users, not general consumers
  • The product instincts to simplify dense, high-trust workflows without dumbing them down
  • Comfort working in a very early-stage environment with high ownership and no safety net
  • Fluency with AI development tools, and the judgment to know when the output needs reworking

Strong plus:

  • Background in fintech, portfolio analytics, BI, enterprise analytics, or developer tooling
  • Familiarity with institutional investing, risk, or quantitative workflows
  • Experience with AgGrid, charting libraries, and workflow-heavy enterprise applications
