Storm2

Senior Backend Engineer – Financial Infrastructure
🌍 Remote (US Only)
💲 $180,000 – $230,000 Base + Meaningful Equity

The Company

Storm2’s client is building the infrastructure layer behind high-volume financial operations. Their platform processes over $100M in transactions every week, orchestrating payments, fraud prevention, compliance workflows, and money movement across a growing network of financial partners.
This isn’t a startup building towards scale. They’re already operating at it.

The Role

Most backend engineering roles let you own a service.
This one gives you ownership of systems that span the entire platform.
Payments touch fraud. Fraud touches compliance. Compliance touches customer operations. Every architectural decision ripples across multiple domains, external financial institutions, and regulatory requirements. The engineers who thrive here are the ones who enjoy untangling complexity and designing systems that stay elegant as the business grows around them.
Three things need to be true about you.
You’ve built and operated production systems where reliability genuinely mattered. You can think beyond individual services and design solutions across multiple domains. And you’re comfortable being one of the people making architectural decisions, not simply implementing them.
The team is lean, highly capable, and shipping quickly. That means real ownership, real influence, and very little distance between a technical decision and its impact on the business.

What you’ll be working on:

  • Designing payment processing systems responsible for moving millions of dollars every day
  • Building distributed services that coordinate payments, fraud detection, compliance, and user management
  • Leading architectural decisions across a growing event-driven microservices platform
  • Improving reliability, fault tolerance, and performance across mission-critical systems
  • Developing integrations with banks, payment providers, and financial infrastructure partners
  • Working closely with compliance and product teams to translate regulatory requirements into scalable systems
  • Establishing engineering standards, design patterns, and technical best practices
  • Mentoring engineers and helping shape the future of the team

What you’ll bring:

  • 5+ years building complex backend systems in production environments
  • Strong Python engineering experience
  • Deep understanding of distributed systems, microservices, and event-driven architectures
  • Excellent system design skills and the ability to navigate complex technical trade-offs
  • Strong computer science fundamentals, including algorithms and data structures
  • Experience with SQL and NoSQL databases
  • Experience working with GCP or a comparable cloud environment
  • Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or a related discipline

Especially interesting if you’ve worked with:

  • Payments, banking infrastructure, fraud prevention, or financial compliance systems
  • High-throughput transaction processing platforms
  • AML, KYC, PCI DSS, or similar regulatory frameworks
  • Banking integrations, ledgering systems, or money movement infrastructure
  • Domain-Driven Design, CQRS, and Clean Architecture principles
  • Large-scale third-party integrations across multiple external systems

Why this role?

  • You’ll help define the architecture of a platform already processing more than $100M every week
  • You’ll work on the kinds of distributed systems problems that are genuinely difficult and highly visible
  • Your technical decisions will influence the direction of the entire engineering organisation
  • You’ll join early enough to shape engineering culture, standards, and best practices
  • Strong compensation package with $180k-$230k base salary plus significant equity upside
  • Remote-first environment with the autonomy to own major technical initiatives
