Engineering Manager – Platform & Infrastructure
🌍 San Francisco, CA (On-site, 5 days per week)
💲 $200,000-$300,000 Base + Quarterly Performance Bonus

The Company

Storm2’s client is a fast-growing insurtech business using AI to modernise how commercial insurance is bought, sold, and serviced. The company has experienced exceptional growth over the last 18 months and is investing heavily in product and engineering as it scales. They’re building software that has a direct impact on revenue, operations, and customer outcomes from day one.

The Role

Most infrastructure leadership roles are about maintaining systems that already exist. This one is about helping define what the platform organisation should become.

Engineering has grown quickly, but the platform function is still relatively early. Today, infrastructure responsibilities are shared across a handful of engineers. The goal is to build a dedicated platform organisation that can support the next phase of growth, improve developer productivity, and create the foundations required to scale AI-powered products reliably and cost-effectively.

This role would suit either an experienced Engineering Manager or a strong Technical Lead looking to step into management. You’ll work closely with engineering leadership to shape the platform vision, build the team, and remain technically credible enough to guide decisions around cloud infrastructure, distributed systems, observability, reliability, and developer experience.

The company ships fast. Really fast. They’re looking for someone who has operated at meaningful scale before and understands how to build systems that survive growth without becoming a bottleneck for the rest of engineering.

What you’ll be working on:

  • Building and leading the platform engineering function as the company scales
  • Defining the roadmap for infrastructure, reliability, observability, and developer productivity
  • Supporting and growing a small team of platform-focused engineers
  • Partnering closely with engineering leadership on team structure, hiring, and organisational design
  • Improving cloud infrastructure across AWS environments
  • Driving best practices around SRE, incident response, monitoring, and operational excellence
  • Helping product engineering teams move faster through better tooling, automation, and internal platforms
  • Managing cloud efficiency and infrastructure costs as usage scales
  • Designing systems and processes capable of supporting large-scale AI workloads
  • Contributing to architectural decisions across distributed systems and high-throughput services

What you’ll bring:

  • Experience leading or mentoring engineers within infrastructure, platform, SRE, or DevOps-focused environments
  • Strong hands-on background in cloud infrastructure, preferably AWS
  • Experience building and operating distributed systems at meaningful scale
  • Strong understanding of observability, reliability engineering, CI/CD, and developer tooling
  • Experience working with technologies such as Python, TypeScript, or similar
  • Ability to balance technical leadership with people management responsibilities
  • Strong communication skills and the ability to influence engineering direction
  • Experience supporting high-growth engineering organisations

The ideal background

You’ll likely be an Engineering Manager, Technical Lead Manager, Staff Engineer, Principal Engineer, or Senior Platform Engineer ready to take a bigger leadership role.
